Today I want to talk to you about a young Spanish designer, ANDREU CARULLA.

Andreu Carulla, was born in 1979 in Banyoles (Spain), as a kid he wanted to be an inventor and wished to create objects.

In 2002 he graduated in Industrial Design from the Polytechnic University of Girona. After gaining experience in different companies and design firms, he founded his own studio in 2005, situated near Barcelona, where the Mediterranean atmosphere boosts its creative activity.

His career path allowed him to explore different approaches to design and manufacturing technologies as jewellery-making, design of consumer goods, street furniture and lighting.

Carulla makes exclusive objects fusing raw materials in their natural state – including natural waste products – with noble materials, such as glass, porcelain and gold leaf, with the help of local artisans.

Sustainability is a thread running through his work, and can be appreciated particularly by his brand of sustainable furniture “Eco Luxury Editions”.

Andreu Carulla says that many people feel that that’s sustainable and environmentally friendly can’t be luxurious and sophisticated. And also they think that something made of a recyclable material should be cheap. But people should know working with natural or recyclable materials takes more time in designing and involves more unconventional manufacturing processes which in turn make these products more expensive to produce.

He created for “El Celler de Can Roca” which has been named one of the best restaurant in the world for whom he created a container in the shape of half a football named “El gol de Messi”, and “Boulder Plate” a serving dish inspired by its visionary owners, the Roca brothers.

Despite his young age he developed a wide variety of remarkable projects: home furniture, jewelry, household goods, food design, technological and industrial products or graphic design.

All his products are based on
emotional link with the consumer, with functionality and sustainabilityas a goal.

Various media have talked about his designs, like the British magazine Wallpaper in 2011, he was appointed as emerging designer. By Elle Decor he was awarded as the best young designer 2012. That same year he was a finalist for the prestigious awards Delta.
